• Balancing Winter Cleanse

    I am participating in the 8th annual “40 Days of Transformation” program at Yoga Centered here in Hilo, based upon Baron Baptiste’s “40 Days to Personal Revolution”.  I even tricked -I mean CONVINCED!- my husband to participate. After spending most of December in an 8×10 foot closet caring for eight puppies around the clock (seriously!) and then the month of January cleaning up after them (good thing they’re cute!), 40 Days was a much-needed exercise in self-care and a return to my yoga practice.  As part of this transformational 40 Days, next week we dive into a cleanse and I’ve been asked to create an alternative to the juice cleanse that the book outlines, which you can access by clicking the “Winter Cleanse Booklet” below.

    At 10 weeks

    Remember, in Ayurveda cleansing is not about deprivation or extremes, it is about encouraging our minds and bodies to reclaim homeostasis which; in yoga and Ayurveda, quality of health is directly associated with balance.  In the Hawaiian winter months, as elsewhere (yes, we get sick in paradise!), we want to focus on building our immune systems, preventing congestion, and keeping the fire element in balance.  There are many simple ways to keep ourselves healthy at this time of year:

    • Make sure you are getting enough rest!  See the Winter Cleanse booklet for recommended sleep times and durations, which vary slightly by dosha.
    • Stay hydrated!  Identify your weight in pounds, then drink HALF that number in ounces of water each day.  For example, if you weigh 200 lbs, drink 100 ounces of water each day.
    • Get regular exercise and spend some time outdoors each day.
    • Frequently incorporate these following foods into your meals:
      • Probiotics
      • Shellfish
      • Salmon
      • Garlic
      • Ginger
      • Zinc supplements
      • Decaffeinated black or green tea
      • Foods with vitamin A, such as carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkin.
    • Diffuse (or dilute with carrier oils and apply topically) the following essential oils throughout the day, the ones with a * are considered “hot” and can irritate the skin, please be careful when handling:
      • Eucalyptus
      • Sage
      • Cinnamon (one of my favorites!)*
      • Frankincense
      • Oregano*
      • Bergamot
      • Lemon
      • Lavender
      • Chamomile
      • Sandalwood
